The Mapping our Stories project is planned as a Tai Tokerau contribution to New Zealand’s First Encounters 250 in 2019 marking the 250th anniversary of the 1769 arrival of HM Bark Endeavour in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The oral histories will provide the foundation of an archive that holds the region’s founding traditions of exploration and encounters. The archive will be held in and by Tai Tokerau for ongoing development and use, in accordance with both tikanga and best archive practise.
The oral histories will provide the narrative for other 2019 legacy projects:
- Education resources for New Zealand schools
- Digital interpretation of the associated Tai Tokerau landscape for both education and tourism purposes
- Publication in book form
